A key element of being an EM specialist is the ability to teach and support.
The GMC requires all clinicians to: set learning objectives, deliver teaching sessions, provide feedback, supervise, mentor, and appraise junior doctors.
The RCEM 2021 curriculum introduced SLO 9 – ‘Support, Supervise and Educate’
SLO 9 is assessed throughout all stages of training (see SLO9 for key capabilities).
Each year trainees must upload a ‘Structured Teaching Assessment Tool’ (STAT) to their eportfolio prior to ARCP
ESLEs, MSF, and attendance at relevant training courses will also be considered at ARCP.
SLO 9 will be assessed formatively in the MRCEM and FRCEM OSCEs.
The AWSEM Teaching Handbook is intended to help EM trainees structure their learning and understanding of SLO 9.
The Handbook was created in August 2021 by:
- Dr Craig Planello (EM Consultant and MSc Clin Ed)
- Dr Grace McKay (EM HST and MSc Clin Ed)
- Dr Ffion James (EM Core Trainee and MSc Clin Ed)
