The Emergency Unit in Cardiff is the major trauma centre for Wales and serves a large catchment for a multicultural population. Both adult and paediatric patients are seen. UHW is a busy department which provides excellent opportunities for experience and development whilst working in a well-supported and dynamic team.
Cardiff is the main teaching hospital of Cardiff University’s School of Medicine and by virtue of the various regional and supra-regional specialties, tends to attract patients from a much wider area.
The Emergency Unit completed a major re-build of the adult areas resulting in a 7-bedded Resus area with separate areas for majors, ambulatory care, streaming, and a Clinical Decisions Unit in 2014.
Minors is a 24/7 ENP-led minor injuries area within the Emergency Unit and we are developing a 24/7 ANP service. There is opportunity for the trainees to rotate within minors to ensure they keep up competencies.
There is a separate paediatric area with 36,000 attendances per annum and it is envisaged this will undergo a major refurbishment into a combined GP / Emergency Assessment Unit. This is open 24 hours a day and is staffed by trained paediatric nursing staff and a dedicated Paediatric emergency medical team.
There is a busy education programme of weekly teaching, simulation, journal club and m+m meetings. The GMC survey results for Cardiff are excellent and continue to improve year on year.
We look forward to welcoming you to a great team!
